Busting Hangover Myths

Ok, so the New Year eve party was great. Now what can you do to get rid of that excruciating hangover? Maybe you could get someone to bury you under moist sand the way the Irish do it? Or do you feel like going the Scottish way and glugone last peg of whisky? If you’re reeling under a list of crazy hangover remedies, you’re at the right place. We bust a few myths and give you some actual tips to ease a hangover.

Myth: The Irish believed that burying a person suffering from a hangover in moist river sand neck deep would cure his/her hangover.

Fact: Running along the banks of the river and drinking a lot of its water will help, but being buried in the sand? Not a chance!

Myth: Drinking more alcohol will prevent the onset of a hangover.

Fact: Time travelling to the Elizabethan Era and stealing a simple hangover anecdote, ‘The Bloody Mary’ with its tangy tomato and salts will help metabolize the alcohol more quickly. Or if you’ve consumed all the vodka that was served, then we suggest a Virgin Mary.

Myth: Caffeine helps get rid of that awful headache.

Fact: Caffeine which is a stimulant is a temporary solution for your headache and it will only get worse once the effect wears off. Energy drinks like Gatorade help in hydration and are better at tackling hangovers, and reducing headaches. Fruit juice is also an effective healthy substitute.

Myth: Men are more susceptible to hangovers than women.

Fact: Women, whose body constitutes a larger amount of fat when compared to water, can get twice as tipsy as men who consume the same amount of alcohol.

Myth: Survive on liquids the morning after.

Fact: Have a light meal, making sure to add the right ingredients – Bananas, eggs, fruits and buttermilk. Basically make sure that whatever you choose to eat is rich in Vitamin C. Avoid fried and fatty food.

Myth: Cold milk can kill a hangover!

Fact: Drinking milk before consuming alcohol coats your stomach, but drinking it afterwards can cause stomach upsets.

As always, prevention is better than cure. Keep your capacity in mind and drink accordingly. For every two glasses of alcohol make sure you drink one glass of water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid drinking when on medication as the reaction of the two can be disastrous. Do not resort to medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen to allay headaches. Be smart and be safe!
